If WeChat Pay and Alipay are the wallets, Maoyan and Taopiaopiao are the ticket booths. Both platforms let you browse showtimes, pick seats, and pay, all without leaving your phone. Which one you choose is mostly a matter of which platform you already live in.
1. Buy with Maoyan
Maoyan (猫眼) is one of China's leading movie ticketing platforms. Its app is in Chinese, but the interface is straightforward once you know the key buttons.
- Download & log in, Search "Maoyan" (猫眼) in the App Store or Google Play. Log in with your mobile phone number, WeChat, QQ, or Apple ID.

Pick a movie and cinema, On the home page, browse what's playing, tap a movie, then choose a cinema and showtime.
- Select your seats, Tap on the seat map to pick your seats. Available seats are shown in white; taken ones are greyed out.
- Pay, Tap "Confirm" (确认), then pay with WeChat Pay or Alipay. The e-ticket is generated immediately after payment.
Via WeChat mini program. If you don't want to install another app, open WeChat → "Services" → "Event Tickets" (电影演出). You'll be redirected to the Maoyan mini program, the process is identical to the app.
2. Buy with Taopiaopiao
Taopiaopiao (淘票票) is Alibaba's ticketing platform, deeply integrated with Alipay. If you already use Alipay, this is the natural choice.
- Download & log in, Search "Taopiaopiao" (淘票票) in the App Store or Google Play. Log in with your mobile number, Alipay, or Taobao account.
- Pick a movie and showtime, Browse the home page, tap a movie, choose a cinema and showtime.
- Select seats and pay, Pick your seats on the seat map, tap "Confirm", and pay with Alipay or WeChat Pay.
Via Alipay mini program. No need to install the app, open Alipay and tap the "Movies" (电影) icon on the home page, or search "movies" in the search bar. You'll enter the Taopiaopiao mini program directly. The experience is just as smooth as the standalone app.
3. Collect your ticket
After payment, you'll receive an e-ticket with a QR code or a ticket collection code. At the cinema, find a self-service ticket machine, scan the QR code or enter the collection code, and your paper ticket prints instantly. If you need help, the staff at the counter will assist you.
one thing the clean screenshots don't show: those self-service machines mostly read a qr code or a chinese id, so if you paid with a passport, walk to the counter and let staff print it, a few cinemas still ask to see the passport once. and read the refund line twice, popular screenings and promo-price tickets are often locked even minutes before showtime, which stung me on a rainy tuesday when plans changed.

Do I need to read Chinese to buy movie tickets in China?
No. The key buttons are easy to recognize, the seat map is visual, and payment goes through WeChat Pay or Alipay, which you already have in English. Use a translation app for movie titles if needed.
Are online movie tickets cheaper than at the cinema counter?
Usually yes, often by ¥5-15 a seat. A standard 2d or 3d show runs about ¥35-45 on a weekday, imax or cinity jumps to ¥60-90, and holiday-blockbuster pricing can start near ¥70.
